William was born in 1915 in NY.  William's father is Alexander Carswell and his mother was Sara McCaughan.  His maternal grandfather was Samuel McCaughan and his maternal grandmother is Matilda Kirkpatrick. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Alexander, Robert, Fredrick, Margaret, Florence and Muriel.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 65 in 1980 in Queens NY.
