Ivey's Tid-Bits

This is a partial history of the Parents of Our Grandfather JOHN WILLIAM IVEY, as he told Our Father LOUIS JOSEPH IVEY and Our Uncle KING BENJAMIN IVEY.

John William “Bill” Ivey, a pioneer native cowman and farmer was born to Jason and Ann Ivey at Leesville, Gonzales County, Texas on January 11, 1859.

 ml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

John Williams’ grandparents migrated from North Carolina to Mississippi about 1820 where three sons were born: Jacob Ivey – 1821, Jason Ivey – 1823, and Tom Ivey – 1825.

Jason Ivey (Father of John William Ivey) married Ann Miller in Mississippi in 1845 and together with his two brothers moved to Gonzales County, Texas in 1846.

To Jason and Ann Ivey were born one daughter Ann – 1847, a son George – 1849, a son Benjamin – 1854 and a son John William – 1859.

Ann Ivey married Charles Reeves and together reared several children. Of which the following are known: Retta Reeves, Novella Reeves and Jason Reeves.

George W. Ivey raised a large family in Gonzales County; in fact he raised two families with ten children in each. Of the second family three of the children were known to have lived in Belton, Texas. They were Plaz Ivey, Ben Ivey and Phil Ivey.

Benjamin Ivey was born in Leesville, Texas but left Texas for Arizona or New Mexico about 1873

Jason Ivey died in 1865 and his wife Ann Ivey died in 1871.

John William Ivey became an orphan at the age of twelve years and had received only a few month of schooling. He lived for two years with his sister Mrs. Ann (Ivey) Reeves.

At the age of fourteen he got his first job, which was carrying mail, by horseback. The job required him to furnish his own horse and make three round trips weekly from Leesville to Gonzales. His salary was five dollars per month. He resigned this post in 1878 and moved to Travis County where he found work on roads near Bee Cave, just west of Austin, Texas. This job paid three dollars a week.

He was a young and lonely boy among strangers and wanted to make friends. One Sunday in his new location, he saddled his horse and rode five miles to church. There he noticed a very beautiful young girl and her brother.  He wanted to meet them so when the service was over he hurried out side and met them.  They were also horseback so he rode down the road about two miles with them.  After that meeting he saw the girl in church often and even got up the courage to visit her at her home. About a year later on August 04, 1880 they were married. Her name was Rocksy Caldonia Kay and her brother’s name was James Wiley Kay. Their mother was Mary Ann (Heffington) Kay.

Rocksy Caldonia (Kay) Ivey was born in the town of Weatherford, Parker County, Texas on April 21, 1864. Her Mothers’ family “the Heffington” a large and very favorably known family had extensive land holdings in Parker and Travis Counties, Texas.

Grandmother, Rocksy Caldonia Ivey was indeed a good and wonderful woman. She was truly admired and loved by all who knew her. She gave birth to fourteen children, ten boys and four girls.

From 1880 to 1897 John William and Rocksy Ivey lived at Bee Cave, Texas where the happiest moments of their lives were spent. It was there that eleven of their fourteen children were born. Throughout their lives they eluded to the good people of Cedar Valley as “Gods chosen children” “The salt of the earth”

In 1897 they moved to McGregor, McClellan County, Texas where they farmed.

In 1900 they moved to a farm and cattle ranch in Erath County near Stephenville, Texas.

It was in Erath County where John William Ivey became prosperous and was highly respected as a cowman.

John William Ivey died September 28, 1946 in Gordon, Texas. Rocksy Ivey died July 05, 1927. They are buried side by side in the Davidson Cemetery in Erath County, Texas.

The following was received from my brother John. He picked it up on his trips to the southeast part of the US. There must be a connection but this old cowboy can’t figure it out.     …..Louis

Here’s something that will get your attention. One book I found says Iveys were French and another says we are English?

I have not found the tie to our great grandfather, Jason Ivey. In the book, “Oak Hill Cedar Valley Pioneers” it says John William Ivey’s grandparents (no names) migrated from North Carolina about 1820 to Mississippi where Jacob (1821), Jason (1823) and Tom (1825) were born. Jason married Ann Miller in Mississippi in 1845 and moved to Gonzales County, Texas in 1846 with his two brothers.

Jason Ivey had three sons and one daughter:

            Ann 1847

            George 1849

            Benjamin 1854

            John William 1859

There may be a tie to the Benjamin Ivey born in 1800 (see below). If Jason Ivey’s father migrated to Mississippi in 1820 and has children in 1821 to 1825 he was probably born around 1800. The Ivey Family notebook written by our cousin Ben l. starts with Jason W. Ivey born 1830 and died approximately 1865). Also the dates do not agree with the birthdates in Oak Hill Cedar Valley Pioneers.

In “My Memoirs” by J. B. Ivey he states:

Thomas Ivye (also spelled Ivie) lives in Glosuter, England about 1425. He was married to Elizabeth Tyell and had at least one son, Richard.

Richard married Isabel Canning and they had one son, Thomas.

Thomas married Elizabeth Keynes and they had one son, Ferdinando [they called him Ferdie and he was probably a lot like you]

Ferninado married a daughter of George Witry and they had two sons, George and William.

George married Lettice Culpepper, daughter of Martin Culpepper. They had six sons, one of whom was named Thomas.

Thomas, born in 1604, married Ann sergeant and emigrated to America in 1625. They had four sons and one daughter. One of these sons was named George.

George married Hannah _______ and settled in Norfolk County, Virginia. They had six sons, one of whom was named George.

George married Elizabeth Langley and had four sons and two daughters. One son was named Adam.

Adam married Mary ______ in 1762 and had four sons and five daughters. One son was named Benjamin.

Benjamin was born in 1800 and died in 1857. He married Mark Shanke, a daughter of George Shanke who served in the war of the Revolution. They had three sons and four daughters.

Elizabeth married Martin Carter of Mount Pleasant, NC.

Sarah married Rev. L.A Whitlock of Stanley County, NC.

In the book, Elements of Highest Import, by Thomas Neal Ivey it states:
